I wasn't going to do a Yarn Along today because I haven't been knitting much (I've been sewing). However, I am seriously in need of book recommendations and so I decided to post. I went to the library yesterday to pick up my kids' holds, browsed the adult fiction section, and left with nothing. I came home and browsed my bookshelves and picked up what you see here.
Believe it or not, I'm an English major, History minor, and Librarian. Yet I have never read The Grapes of Wrath. Dissolution is one I picked up from my Grandma's house. She has recommended great books to me in the past, namely Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon and Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. I could not put those down. Now whenever I go to her house, I tend to borrow something. She didn't recommend this though. I found it. It's starting out okay. Not sure how far I'll get. Mayflower is one I've had, but never read. We'll see. I'm kind of in the mood for fiction.
The bottom two books are Project Wild and Project Wild Aquatic Curriculum books. I went to a free training through Texas Parks and Wildlife a couple of weeks ago and I'm going through them to see what activities I might do with my oldest daughter come September. I'm doing actual homeschool planning despite her being four. I'm doing the planning more for me than her. I need to plan activities to keep me off of the computer! I really want to start blogging and reading blogs only at night and on weekends. Wish me luck! ...and please recommend some books! Check out others or post your own Yarn Along over at Small Things.
Quite the stack! It's hard deciding, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteIsn't it funny...the books that slip under the radar of even the most dedicated bibliophiles. For me, that list is very long when it comes to fiction. The Project Wild books look very interesting! Best of luck to you on your planning and blog disciplining!
ReplyDeleteyou know I never thought i'd be one to need blog discipline. whenever i read others talking about their need for a break i'm like, oh whatever, you don't need a break! it's ok to blog, it's good to blog. however, i really see things differently now. my house is a little messier, i'm doing a little less with my kids, etc. i started blogging and reading blogs for tips on how to live more sustainably and found all these great people raising their kids in amazing ways. i love it! i get to communicate with people who i have a lot in common with who i would not have met without blogs. however, there's definitely a balance that needs to be struck and i think it needs to be about 95% house and family and 5% blog. so let me stop typing now and get back to my home :-)
ReplyDeleteI find it so difficult to find anything, I want to read, at the library. Its almost like they are catering for a totally different age group or interest set. The second hand bookshops are a totally different matter!
ReplyDeleteA great stack of books! I also was an English major and have never read The Grapes of Wrath. Shhh! Don't tell anyone or they might take our degrees away! :)
ReplyDeleteI read The Grapes of Wrath a few years ago with my son for History. I have to say honestly that I found it a little boring. Maybe it was just me because it is considered a classic, but I wanted to be honest. I have the Mayflower on my shelf, but haven't read it yet. My 'to be read pile' just gets bigger and bigger.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think I would ever need a blogging break either until I looked at my clock one day and saw I had been on the compter for three hours! No shower, beds unmade, dirt on the floor, dishes in the sink..I needed to get a grip! I have learned so much from so many wonderful women out there and I love to visit everyone, but now I put a limit on my time or I'll never get anything accomplished.xx
I haven't been doing the yarn along because I've been mostly sewing as well this summer. Maybe we should do a summer sew along:) I'll be knitting frantically when it starts to get cooler and wishing I'd done more in the summer. Those project wildlife books sound very intriguing.
ReplyDeleteHmm, I read Into the Wild by Krakauer and thought it was one of the most awful things I've ever read. In fact, I wrote a paper about it being awful if I remember correctly. Perhaps one of his other novels where he's not guessing about how another person thought and felt might be better. Perhaps I ought to give some of his other work a try.
ReplyDeletelol, i liked into the wild. i thought he did quite a bit of research actually. into thin air is better and under the banner of heaven is quite interesting. obviously, into the wild is a lot of speculation as he was out there alone. still interesting to think about.
ReplyDeletei liked the pat tillman one too...
