Damn! Sewing and knitting are expensive! I thought I'd go to Half Price Books and sell all my Noam Chomsky, Edward Said, etc. books I read in college in order to have money to buy fabric and knitting supplies. Well, I got $15 for the books and the supplies cost me $75. Considering we have a weekly food/gas/other budget of $120, that is way too much! Looks like I'm going to have to knit and sew super slow. Maybe I can enter a bunch of the blog giveaways and win some fabric or yarn. Ugggh! Oh well.
remember I told you how many thousands of dollars I spent sewing???? You're right - it IS expensive........
ReplyDeleteI love sewing and knitting too but as a college student/ artist/ musician I have very little money. The best thing I've figured out for supply acquiring is thrift stores! I'll buy mumus/ skirts/ sheets with interesting colors or patterns and take them home and either remake them into something different or just cut chunks out to make new things entirely. also a great way to get yarn is to buy large sweaters from thrift stores and unravel them. you'd be surprised the quality and quantity of yarn you can get that way for about $2 per sweater!
ReplyDeletehope this helps, - Auburn
I love thrift stores. I never thought about the sweater thing, great idea! Now I just need someone to watch my kids while I go. I always have to take them and they run up and down the aisles, pull the toys down, etc. I can't concentrate and always end up having to rush.
ReplyDeleteWe love to upcycle using clothes from the thrift store :)
ReplyDeletebefore buying sweaters for yarn, make sure you know which ones to look for. It is called frogging (you can google it). Some sweaters work way better then other.
You can also try freecycle for fabric and yarn. I know there are always people out there who horde (guilty) fabric and yarn until they realize someone else might be able to use it.
Another option is to try swapping some items you have and don't need for what you do need. If it is craft related, you can try the swaps at craftsters.org.
I am enjoying your site- I followed the link from Saturday's Artist.
